Judy, you are so correct.  That was one of the first things I learned in 
orientation and mobility when I was 14 years old.

A couple of moves that can deter this is to bring your elbow back when 
someone grabs it, stopping their steering ability.



Another is to bring your elbow forward and turn in the opposite direction to 
face them, for instance, if they have your left elbow, bring that forward 
out of their reach as you turn to your right.



If the would-be “steerer” is to be your guide, and attempting to steer with 
your left elbow, you pivot to the left, take their arm with your right hand, 
breaking their hold on your left elbow, while allowing you to take their 
elbow with your left hand instead, as you explain what you are doing.



That used to be reffered to as the “Hines Break.”  😊  Guess where it may 
have been developed.  😊
