If you pour a gallon jug of milk over the sink, you are very likely to overshoot and lose a lot more, I have found, than pouring over the counter. You do put your pointer finger, up to the first knuckle and pour till you feel it at the tip of your finger. That way, if you are pouring kind of fast, maybe faster than intended, you can stop in time. But, when you lift the carton, you always dribble a little on the counter. I therefore, always try to remember, to bring a wet wash rag with me to wipe quickly, any dribbles. With milk, and more so with hot beverages, when pouring into a glass, you can hear the pitch go up in sound as you reach the top of the glass/cup. I do pour milk into my coffee cup and just a little, like I was using a little creamer. Try to not let the milk carton/jug turn either to the right, or left while you are pouring, as it will dribble more than you expect, on the counter. You should, for sanitation reasons, never drink from a carton. It pollutes any milk poured afterwards and could cause it to sour sooner. Plus, bad germs get carried to anyone else who drinks from a glass, poured from that carton. Never do it.

Now, pouring into a cereal bowl?
