 Bingo party a hit with veterans

At the start of the evening, it didn't look like bingo was treating Eugene
Cherry very well.

After all, everyone else at his table had gotten a bingo and was sporting
their prizes - comfy-looking grey fleece pullovers - but he hadn't scored a
bingo all night.

Finally, Cherry won the very last round on a blackout - and scored the grand
prize of $50. "I finally got lucky," he said, grinning.

Cherry was just one of the 23 veterans from the Hines V.A. Hospital who took
part in the pizza party and bingo night recently sponsored by the Orland
Park Veterans Commission. The event was an opportunity to not only provide
the veterans with good food and fun, but it also was a chance for the
commission and local VFW members to be in fellowship with them as well.

"We were thrilled to have an opportunity to host the veterans here,"
commission member Gail Blummer said. "Typically, commission members visit
the veterans at Hines or at other facilities. They've never had a chance to
come here."

Mike Capuano, VFW member and Hines volunteer, came up with the idea to bring
the veterans to Orland Park. "I've worked with veterans at Hines for the
last five years, and I always look forward to the time I spend there every
week," he said. "I thought this would be a great way to connect them with
the commission here in Orland, and when I asked Gail about it, she thought
it was a great idea."

According to Capuano, who served in Vietnam from 1963 to 1967 with the
Marines, there are 34 veterans in Hines' program for those who are legally
blind. "Some are able to see a little, and some are completely without
sight," he said. "At Hines, the veterans are taught to cope with their loss
of sight by relearning everyday activities such as eating and dressing."

Capuano also said that since Hines only has room for 34 blind veterans at a
time, some wait for up to a year to be admitted. "It's a great facility.
I've been there for some treatment of my own, and it's incredible to see how
many good things Hines does for veterans," he said. "It makes me want to
help out the other veterans who are there
