Share the following information with your patriotic friends!
This weekend, a specially built home was started for Army SPC Luis Puertas
of Orlando. Luis lost both legs in an explosion in Iraq in 2006 -
actually, 20 September is his "Alive Day." The building of that home will be
ongoing thru November. Donations of supplies and monies are very welcomed,
volunteers too – especially those with construction experience. With luck,
Luis and his fiancée will be in the house for the holidays! And a great way
to start a new year!
Site: Roberts Island Road in southeast Orange County, just outside of the
I-417 corner loop. See the following link for further information:

WWII veterans will be leaving from OIA for a day-long trip to Washington
DC on Sunday. "Honor Flight" of East Central FL based in Melbourne is
sending abt. 25 vets and their companions up this month, and abt. 25 vets and
their companions next month.
Sunday, September 25th - they arrive at OIA at approximately 6:00 AM. at
the Southwest Airlines terminal. They arrive back at OIA at approximately
8:40 PM
Another group on October 30th - arrive at OIA at approximately 6:15AM.
They arrive back at approximately 7:50 PM. All times are estimated at this
time and are subject to change before the day and during that day for a
multitude of reasons.
It's great fun and very incredibly rewarding to wave them off on their
journey in the morning and to welcome them home again at night! Although the
veterans are worn out from the day, they are always grinning ear to ear.
There's usually a cheering line and waving flags in the evening because few
persons want to be there in the morning when they leave so early. But
there's usually a police and veteran motorcycle escort from Melbourne in the
morning. So cool and so rewarding to cheer our greatest generation for
their service!
Then East Central FL "Honor Flight" will pause on trips until next year
when weather gets better. www.honorflightecfl.org/
Similar "Honor Air" of Volusia County is sending up veterans on this Sat.
24 Sept. but they will be leaving from Daytona International Airport.
Arriving at airport at 4:15AM; returning approx. 8:30PM.

"Honor Flight" of Central Florida is just getting started, just got their
charter and Board together, and hopes to start sending WWII vets to DC in
the spring. Know of any corporate sponsors?!!??
FYI – if you are not familiar - "Honor Flights" from across the country
work to send WWII vets to the WWII Memorial, Arlington Cemetery and sometimes
Iwo Jima Memorial, and/or Korean War Memorial. Other terminally ill
veterans can sometimes be included and may also get to go to the Korean War
Memorial and/or the Vietnam Wall. The flights usually get met by a high
ranking officer, Honor Guards, etc. and go by bus to the monuments. They get
meals and water thru the day. Each veteran must be accompanied by a
companion escort (may be a family member or a volunteer) who makes sure that the
vet takes his/her medications on time and looks after their every need -
including pushing a wheelchair if needed. Veterans always go for free -
they've paid already with their service to our country. Companions pay abt.
$500 each to go. Medical personnel (docs and nurses) also go for free and
must be able to handle any emergency and transport the medical equipment packs
to the monuments.

Sunday, 25 September is Gold Star Mothers Day. It honors the parents who
lost a child serving in the armed forces. There is a VFW Auxiliary
luncheon event, as there has been for many years, but it is private and
invitation only for the families. But there is, for the first time, another event
in Orlando City Hall that is public. 2pm in the Orlando City Hall Rotunda.
There may/may not be Gold Star families there - it's kinda hard for some
of them to attend public events. Sponsored by VITAS and Baldwin-Fairchild.
RSVP’s for attendance is requested. Whether you attend or not, keep these
families in your thoughts.

The author of "Black Hawk Down" - Danny R. McKnight, Col. USA ret.- is now
one of the national spokespersons for this group.
Eating at UNO Chicago Grill all month and until Oct.9 can provide funds
to support those efforts. There are several locations in Central Florida.
20% of your guest check, with the voucher, will be donated to OS91. The
Voucher is available for printing at the OS91 website.

I found out Fri. that there should be 7 Marine Reservists coming home in
mid-Oct. I hope they'll all be together. Will keep you informed. 24
Marine Reservists assigned to the local Reserve Center left last week for
Afghanistan from Camp Lejeune. I'll try to get more info from the command this
week for the purpose of care packages - especially if some of these Marines
don't have a strong family network.
………………………………
Do you know of a job opening? There are discharged military veterans and
current military reservists and guardsmen who NEED jobs! After returning
home from deployment, some previous employers were no longer in business.
Garfield Jones works for ESGR - Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
_www.esgr.mil_ (http://www.esgr.mil/) He assists ALL BRANCHES with job
matches. Contact him at (w) 407-856-6100 x1519 or
_garfield.jones at navy.mil_ (http://mrd.mail.yahoo.com/compose?To=garfield.jones@navy.mil) Put
these men and women into work before the holidays and the end of the year!

If you know of a Patriotic event (NO political events, please. NONE!) send
me the info with the Who, What, Where, When, and the event contact
person(s). Preferably include an internet link instead of an attachment of the
event flyer. I will TRY to get events consolidated and sent to a network of
likewise caring persons.
Caring and sharing,
Cathy Haynes

numerous other veterans and military organizations.
