Subject: [BlindVet-Talk] Memorial Day and the disconnect of this Society

Dear Listers,
My name is Marianne Haas and I do not often post to the list.   However, I
saw an incident, which brought home the disconnect of the civilian world
with our military and Veterans.  

My Boyfriend, (a Veterand) and I visited the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda.
This is the ship from which the Dolittle Raid started.  This is also the Air
Carrier that saved Apollo 11.  When we started the tour, we heard very loud
rap music on the ship.  The language was very disrespectful and the flight
deck was closed to the public.  We were told that there had been a rap
concert the day before and that the people left a mess on the flight deck.
The rap music was so loud that we could not hear the tour guide. My
boyfriend, who guided me as a blind person, had to raise his voice to give
me instructions about ladders and bulkheads. Before we left, we complained
to the ship's security, just to be told in a condescending voice, that the
Rappers were aloud to practice for the next event that evening.

After we got home, my boyfriend (a current Member of the USS Hornet) filed a
written complaint.  Later on, we found out that the rappers used very
disrespectful language toward the current President and Commander and Chief.
I do support freedom of speech, but had difficulties with the disrespect.

I do not like everything Donald Trump does, but he is the President at this
time.  The young recruits have to put their opinions away and follow their
Commander and Chief.  What kind of message are we giving to young people, if
we disrespect those who died to keep us free?  Also, there was a strong
smell of Marijuana.  I am not saying that there should not be events to
benefit the USS Hornet.  However, we need to start respecting the people who
keep us free.  Also, Tom Hanks, (who never served and disrespects the
President) is on the board of the Hornet.
