Hello:

     A cane works fine for searching. One time I sprained my ankle while on 
a trip to Canada. The nice people at the CNIB gave me a support cane with a 
crook handle. I have sometimes used the crook feature to get items out from 
under couches or beds. A curtain rod with an L shaped end will also work. If

you are dealing with things like Legos, I would suggest going to a 
restaurant supply place and buying a large tray or baking sheet. These can 
provide for an area to keep pieces contained.
