My son was very difficult to work with crying and throwing a fit if I
pushed too hard. I ended up relying heavily on learning software games.
The V Smile which hooks up to the TV is one. I purchased the original
Leapfrog leapster and two cartriges "the letter factory" and "the Word
Factory". These learning games broke the ice and gave my son a firm
foundation for phonics. Later I used my scrabble board to write funny
words and silly sentences to practice reading.
Recently my son and I are enjoying listening to recorded books from our
local public library. It took many tries but we finally found a book he
enjoyed and then another and another. Now I have to turn the book off so
he gets some sleep instead of staying up listening half the night.

Your plan to stay in a school system that supports you and your son's
special needs sounds like a good one though it might make making
friends a little harder.
