[blparent] Questions about purchasing baby items

Hi,
I did do a theme for my baby's room, more based on a feeling then anything
else. I know the colours match, but most baby items you buy are in either
soft baby colours or bright ones, so you can pick and choose, and most
things go with most other things. I thought it would be better to have
different colours and different textures for the baby to look at and feel,
so the room would have things all over to stimulate his senses and keep his
interest. His room is really cute with amimals all over the place from the
mobile to the swing. I used mostly the rainforest theme from fisherprice,
and there are other little things that fit in with it around too. His
basinette is blue with Teddy bears on the mobile, and his diaper stacker has
monkeys on it.
As to your question about things being accessible when you buy them, the
simple answer is no, most things you buy are not accessible, but you can
easily make them so by doing simple adaptations. The only thing I have is a
talking thermometer which you can get from independant living aids. I don't
know the site, but a google search should get you there easily. In terms of
medacin spoons, they're hard to use if you're blind, and not worth buying
imo. A better option would be to buy one of those seringes that have the
nipple on the end, and have somebody mark the plunger with a knife where the
measurements are so as you put up the plunger you can feel the markings to
know when to stop. Also, when you are given a medacin that's perscription
you can get the pharmacist to mark a seringe for you in the same way as
above. I also had somebody go through and help me label all the books I
had, so I could read them to my baby, and I'll do the same thing with this
one as well. If you can, it might be helpful to suggest that someone buy
you a braille labler so you can label things like books etc. Other than
that I didn't have anything else that was really accessible, or adapted to
be so. Most things you'll get given will be usable by you right out of the
box, or can be learned how to use in no time at all.
