Hi, The diagnostic criteria has changed to include people on the high functioning end of the Autism spectrum. This includes Asperger's syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder. When they did this the statistic on Autism went up and the amount of people classified as MR went down. It still the same people just a different label.

Next question

Infants who are later identified as Autistic have eye contact that is often very different then typical children. They tend to have specific sensory needs. As they develop thier babbling and play is slightly different and language development is not typical. All of these things are so subtle that a parent will often not notice them as different. Several studies have taken old home movies of children with Autism and discovered may signs that went unnoticed until the children's language and social behavior differences were noticed by the parent. Autism at it's core is a communication disorder that is why parents begin to notice something is wrong around 18 months- 2 years when the child should be developing good communication skills. This just happens to also be the time of the 18 month old shots.
