Now that  I do understand. Once they've committed to a meal, that's it,
they can eat or not eat.

Sure this works well before you make whatever...You can ask them what
they want.  We usually do with Colyn.  But then what if they get to the
table and decide they want something else, as four-year-olds are want to
do?  You wait until yours is a little older and she decides after you've
made something she said she wants, and then won't eat it why you can eat
what you're given is a very good idea.
