personally, i've really never used a baby monitor. I have literally used
ours about five times in the last fourteen months (usually when we're having
people over for an occasion, and I know I won't hear her over the crowd
noise). at first, I had Elise with me in our room, so I always knew what she
needed. then, I put her in her bedroom, which shares a wall with ours, so
it's very easy to hear her. I just find that I usually have her close enough
to me that hearing her isn't an issue. even when she's in her room, and I'm
in another part of the house, I typically have no difficulty hearing her cry
or talk. and, yes, we have a very large house. of course, we're typically
quieter people, and she is *not* a quieter baby :). if you have really loud
music or television programs on a lot, or if you frequently have piles of
people in your house that would drown out the noise of your baby, then you
might need a monitor more.
