[blparent] Items you couldn't live without

I was offered used cribs by friends, but I couldn't bring myself to take
them. Cribs can become unsturdy if they are taken down and put back up, as
screws and wood become stripped...not to mention babies chewing on the
rails... I'm not saying nobody should do it, but I would be very careful
about it. Make sure you know who you're getting it from, and how many times
it has been reassembled.
As far as car seats go, it isn't recommended that you use a car seat that is
more than 6 years old. Exposure to changes in temperature can weaken the
materials and they might not be as effective in a crash. Plus, standards
change over time. So if you do accept a used car seat, make sure it has
never been in a crash and find out the date it was manufactured. I chose to
go with a brand new car seat with my third child for my own peace of mind,
but that's me. I was given a shower by my church so I was able to do that.
If I couldn't afford a new seat, I would definitely stick with these
standards.
