I grew up in Houston, got a 3-speed Schwinn for my 8th birthday in 1957. I
could see at the time. There was actually a working oil well at the end of
our street. I rode all over that part of town. There was a whole field of
"iron trees" -- oil rigs in the process of drilling, about 5 miles from our
house. It was one of my favorite places to go -- always something
interesting going on. There were fields -- cat tails higher than my head --
and little water courses -- probably tributaries of the bayous. I had the
run of the place. My parents never worried, and I always made it home when
I got hungry. Talk about sounding like a geezer.
