[blparent] "scream it out" method

Hi,
This is how we did it, not sure if it will work for you or not.
We had a bedtime routine, and after the routine we would put them in bed,
and pat them for a minute or 2 and leave.
If they started crying, we waited 5 minutes before going in. We did not
take them out of their bed/crib, but we would stand their and talk softly to
them and pat them for a few minutes.
The second time they started crying, we waited 7 minutes before going in,
Then 10 minutes, etc...
Usually after the 3rd time they would stay quiet, or they would stop crying
before the time was reached.

Okay, I don't want to hear from you if you disapprove of this method. What
I do want to hear is how is it supposed to work.
One of my twins had swimmer's ear so we sat with him a few nights--and went
to him during the nights--because we knew he was hurting and wanted to
comfort him. Now he expects us to sit with him every night and wakes two to
three times during the night and expects us to sit with him, sometimes for 3
hours and sometimes only fifty minutes, till he goes back to sleep.
Consequetly, no one is getting sleep.
For those of you who are new, I have autistic, blind eight-year-old twins
adopted from China five years ago. This is the more advanced one who
functions around a three- to four-year-old level.

A path well-trod,
A familiar lane
Through sacred sod,
A road we travel
Too often, I fear,
For there are the good times
When things are hard here,
