Hi, fellow blind parents.

I hope you're all having happy, healthy holidays.

This year was so crazy for me that I almost lost sight of the meaning
of Christmas. I was exhausting myself finishing my errand-running and
shopping in preparation for our family Christmas dinner, toting my
baby around in my backpack on trains, buses and whatever else we had
to do to get where we were going. While all that was going on, my
husband suddenly called to say he was inviting over one of our friends
who's lost a lot of his sight. On top of that, this friend of ours is
unemployed, his grown kids are busy with their lives and his wife's
leaving him. Not a great year for him. My husband asked if he could
show his friend around our house and how we, as blind parents do all
kinds of things including cook. I thought: Oh, great. This will really
mess up my plans for our dinner tonight if everyone's standing around
cooking things while I'm trying to get our meal together. After about
ten minutes of being put out because he had come up with this
last-minute plan, I remembered that for those of us who celebrate it,
Christmas is about the birth of a baby boy who grew up to teach us how
to love and help out each other--not about planning perfect dinner
parties. So I let them wander around in the kitchen as much as they
wanted to and they even helped get everything out on the table for the
six of us there at dinner tonight. We all really had a wonderful time!

So, enjoy the rest of 2010 and all the best in the new year to you and
your families!

Jen
