I was just thinking that a good place to start teaching or as it will be,
educating them is in the colleges and universities. We should get them
before they get their degrees. V

I just got my MSW in May. I really didn't feel my program at NYU had nearly
enough info on disabilities. I did a presentation once for my practice class
in which I talked about growing up as a blind child, being a blind mother,
and everything in between, as well as showing a few adaptive aids. I tried
to make the point that a person with a disability is often more capable than
is assumed and that the person should be asked about what services would be
helpful to them instead of a worker making decisions for them. the class
just kept saying how strong I was and that they didn't think everyone with a
disability had my strength. It was frustrating how un-enlightened my peers
were, and the professor as well.

This is so upsetting. It gives social workers a bad name, and it hits
close to home, because I have my degree in this field. Knowing the classes
that they must take to graduate, thinking like this should not exist in this

field. Social workers are always taught to respect different cultures,
disabilities, and circumstances. How a CPS worker could actually hold these

thoughts is beyond me. That nurse should also respect differences as well.
It makes me so upset that there are people out there that think we, as blind

parents, can't raise our children. I truly hope that little girl is home
soon. I wonder when the final hearing is?
