I agree a hundred percent. Sharon, I can empathize with your NICU staff
issues. It's one thing being a new mother, hormones and all, but it's a
doublewhammy when you have to be both student and teacher and constantly be
bombarded with questions and false assumptions. One thing I've offered to
do is come back to the NICU with Michael and do a presentation on my
experiences, what and what not to do when dealing with parents with
disabilities, and so on.

The hospital should definitely be sued, when this is all over and she is
home with her parents where she belongs. And the nurse should be fired. The
CPS workers should also be given some kind of disciplinary action; they are
supposed to be able to correctly assess situations.
This really hit close to home for me. When my twins were in the NICU, there
were 2 nurses who wrote down every question I asked and said I would of
course always need to have someone at home with me and the boys. It got to
the point that I was not able to bond with my boys during the little time I
had to spend with them each day and I was afraid of exactly this happening.
I went to the mead dr. of the NICU and she arranged a meeting with the
nurses, a social worker, and a couple of other dr.s. I was an exhausted new
mother and so all that happened was a reprimanding of the nurses. I always
thought maybe I had been a bit paranoid, hormones and all, at the time. But
reading this tells me that we have to somehow increase the awareness of the
capability of disabled parents so that this situation will never again
occur. BTW, some of the other nurses helped me to learn how to nurse both
babies at once, a difficult task with preemies who aren't so good at
latching on; it took a lot of practice, trial and error. Now my boys are the
biggest in their class so I guess blind mothers can nurse just as good as
sighted ones, eh?

Hi,
the bonding time with not just her mother but both parents is what I thought
of when I read this. It's sickening that people feel that blindness is a
reason to take children from parents, and first time parents at that. What
first time parent knows how to nurse and who isn't nervous about taking care
of a brand new baby?
