[blparent] question of napping

The only time Gab was callicky was when I was drinking cow milk. I found
that when I changed to rice milk, those extreme fussy periods disappeared.

Some babies, just like some people, don't take well to schedules. Elise
really didn't have a reliable feeding or napping schedule until she was over

a year old. She would have periods of a few weeks where she would seem to be

getting onto a schedule, but then it would totally change again. All you can

really do if you have a child like this is get really good at reading her
cues, and responding to them as quickly as you can. Another thing that might

help when your daughter is fussy is wearing her. If you have a good carrier
that you like, that closeness can be very soothing to baby. Keep in mind,
the carriers can get hot, so depending on external temps, you might want to
have her in as few clothes as possible while she's in it. I used to put
Elise in a onesie or just her diaper if I was wearing her around the house.
Finally, some babies are colicky within the first few months of life. This
goes way beyond fussiness, and is usually characterized by out and out
screaming that lasts for hours at a time. Elise screamed from about 6 - 9
every evening for the first 3.5 months of her life. It didn't matter what we

did - holding, wearing, feeding, changing, bathing, burping, rocking,
swinging, swaddling, warming her up, cooling her down...nothing worked. The
only saving grace for us at those times was her swing or cosleeping, but a
lot of the times, not even those things helped.
If you do end up with a harder to soothe baby, I would recommend two books
(both available through BARD and NLS):
Raising the Fussy Baby and High Need Child,
and
The Happiest Baby on the Block

Another really great book (also through Bard and NLS) that talks you through

the various areas of your child's development at every age is:
Touchpoints - Birth to Aged 3

It is by a pediatrician, and goes through sleeping, eating, cognitive,
physical, and social milestones that are typical at the common Baby Well
Checkup ages - 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, etc.
