One thing I did was give a presentation on what it's like to be a blind
parent at my pediatrician's office and they were very receptive to it. At
the end of the presentation when I opened up the floor to questions, there
were none. That either meant that I answered all the things they were
wondering about or they just didn't know what to say. I did not do this
presentation to win their confidence, rather, I did it to educate. I did
hand out the books at the presentation too.

Eric,
You're not stepping on toes, you are providing useful data.
I assume that you are a dad or soon to be dad? When you go with your
kids or wife or baby mommy to appointments, mention the books and give
them to whoever you see. If you aren't going to appointments, start
doing that, at least to some of them.
What am I missing? This is not a personal transaction we're talking
about. Stepping on toes would be say if you came into my house and
insisted on making a meal I didn't need or want you to make. You're not
engaging with these people ona personal level. Remember that. Also,
don't ask if you can give the books to them, simply give them the books.
They may or may not use them, but you do not ask if it is okay to give
them the books, you tell them and then you do it.

Hi Eric. I have some ideas of how you can hand out these books without
becoming solicitus. Please write me off list and we'll discuss it.
Thanks.

Subject: [blparent] Parenting Without Sight: What Attorneys And Social
Workers Should Know About Blindness

Hi people, did any of you read Gary Wunder's article in the Braille
Monitor?
It was about Erika Johnson and Blake Sinnett trying to get back Mikaela
from
from Child Protective Services after 57 days. This outrages me! And
I'm
sure it does to all of you. I've heard that Missouri, the "Show Me
State,"
didn't help their cause by sqpeeding up the custody process. I hear
that
NFB has booklets called: Parenting Without Sight:
What Attorneys and Social Workers Should Know About Blindness. However,
I
need to know the cost of these booklets. Also, I plan to hand these
booklets out at hospitals. Why do I want to do this as a Christmas
project?
Because I would like to educate. So here's my question to you, as an
independent advocate for the blind, who is blind myself: How do I hand
these
booklets out without soliciting? I know what the message is in these
booklets, so how can I convey it without stepping on attorneys' and
social
workers' shoes?

Any help from any of you, on or off-list, would be greatly appreciated.

Eric
