it depends on your child in terms of solids. some kids start with basic 
foods as young as five months (though that's usually because of some other 
issue, like having trouble processing formula, reflux, etc.) some kids start 
as late as 9 months if they seem to be getting enough nutrition from milk 
and don't show a desire to eat earlier. however, the primary form of 
nutrition for the first 12 months is milk. food before then is simply for 
learning purposes: learning what foods taste like, learning how to hold a 
spoon, learning how to put food into your mouth, etc.
