I never cared for the football hold. My favorite position was laying down
with a pillow wedged against my back for support and a small rolled blanket wedge to hold the baby on his or her side.

When nap nursing was not an option, I would sit in a chair with an armrest or on the sofa with a couple of pillows to support my arm that held the baby's head. With a pillow supporting your arm, hold the baby across your lap.

Sometimes, just touching the baby's lips with your nipple will cause the baby to open wide and latch on. It's very important that the baby's mouth is wide open. Otherwise, he won't latch on properly.

Gently rubbing your finger on the baby's cheek will also cause the baby to reflexively open his mouth.

Don't be discouraged. For something so natural, it can take a bit of practice and fumbling to get into the groove. Eventuality, you will find what works for you.

I found that when I had too much help, that included my husband, we just
couldn't seem to do it ourselves. When all was quiet and no one was
watching, Gabriella just latched on. I held her with her head in the crook
of my elbow and just made sure her nose was to the side of my nipple.
Don't worry, you can do it. Take a deep breath and don't get too worried.
I think that was the key to our success was the quiet, no expectations.
Just put your nipple in front of his mouth, I mean right in front so your
nipple is touching his lips Don't try to force his mouth open just make sure
he knows the milk is for him. If you have to squeeze a little onto your
finger and put it in his mouth. Don't give him a bottle to supplement him
or he will choose the bottle as he doesn't have to work too hard for it.

Hello everyone,
Just a quick question for those of you who breastfed your babies. I am three
weeks in to it and still having a lot of trouble latching the baby on by
myself. This is getting very frustrating that I need someone sighted to help
me do this. I use one finger to feel when his mouth is open and some of the
time I can do it successfully, but a lot of times we both get frustrated and
I need my husband to help me. Any other tips for getting babies to latch on
more easily without sight? Also, I'm wondering if there are any certain
positions that you've found work better for this. I've been using the
football hold but I found it hard to get him in to position and out of it
when it's time to burp because he's so far to my side. Any tips would be
appreciated. I really want to be able to do this independently and I only
have one week left before my husband goes back to work.
Thanks so much.
Ronit

La Leche league is a great place to contact. I never could use one of those
pillows for nursing. I always felt that my baby was too low. V

do you have a nursing pillow? if so, you might try laying him on it across
your lap. breastfeeding is not easy. I ended up pumping exclusively for 22
weeks because we were both so frustrated. I would really encourage you to
find a good and open minded lactation consultant. I wish I had done this, as

I think it would have made all the difference for us.

Have you tried nursing laying down, or with a nursing pillow? If you touch
his cheek he should open his mouth. Part of it is just experience for both
of you. I also agree a lactation consultant may have some ideas. I do know
many many blind people nurse, and many sighted mothers nurse in the pitch
black half asleep at night so it can be done. Prayers things get better.

Hi,

Be careful of taking too much advice from Le Leche league. They?re great if you are exclusively breast feeding, but I found that they were very close-minded and judgmental when I told them I had introduced a bottle of breastmilk to my son. I went to them because I was having a little trouble feeding Remus from my left breast, so I had started to pump that breast and fed it to him after breastfeeding from both sides. The woman I spoke to informed me that I was causing my problems and that I should stop using the bottle immediately, because the baby was having nipple confusion issues. I did this, and when I took him to the doctor a week later he had lost a bunch of weight. My doctor told me that if I couldn?t breast feed, I should pump and feed him, and that he?d had similar experiences with new mothers and the Le Leche league. I hope this isn?t the case with all mothers, and that other mothers on the list have had more success with them, but that was my experience with them.

I was actually thinking she might find a consultant at a local hospital.
hopefully that person won't be afiliated with LLLI. I would say if you don't
feel comfortable with someone, keep looking.

Hi. I use a "My Breast Friend wearable nursing pillow. Similar to the
boppy but the pillow does not slide around. I went to my lactation
consultant and we figured out what worked best so I was able to use it. It
helped get baby in a more faborable position for latching on and he lies
across in front of me facing my stomach. You can adjust pillow to desired
height too. Let me know if you need more info. It's kind of a pain to have
to put the pillow on each time, but it is sooo worth it!

Ronit
