Yeah, it works well for us too, I suggest the prepaid phones because if it's

a first cell phone you want to make sure they use it responsibility and if
it gets lost it's no big deal.  With my daughter I bought her a real cell
phone at a young age and I will never, ever do that again.  Her and a friend

called someone in Canada that they knew from school here and um a 1200
dollar phone bill later I'm a smarter parent.

I did the prepaid cell phone thing. my daughter use to walk a block to
school and she would call me once leaving the school and talk to me all the
way to the front door. I enjoyed this a lot. it gave her the independence
she needed and the comfort I needed to know she was ok.
