We had a nice dresser in Gab's room and that was the right height, however
it wasn't always convenient for me,

That's what I do as well on a daily basis with Dawson because the counter is
also the perfect height for me since I'm tall.  I have an island so it helps
because a changing station takes up space for sure.

I had a hard time getting down on the floor because of my back and hips, so
I used a changing pad on a countertop.  It was the right height for me. 
It's all about what works best for each person and his or her baby.
