Look for a docking station. That's what this is called. Then you can put the docking station with the Iphone in it where you need to.
You could also skype and since that's in real time, the family can tell you how it looks on their end. If this matters to you, I'd suggest you go to the Apple Store and explain the situation. AT&T and Verizon also sell Iphone stuff.
I don't think you'll find an actual tripod.
Really though I'd seriously look into skyping.

I checked Apple's Iphone accessories for a tripod or something and did
not find one.
To record the baby, we have to put the camera six-eight inches
parallel to the baby. and, this is hard to do when/if we want to be in
the pic ourselves.
any recommendations?
DH's family just loves videos since they can't hold the baby themselves.
