[blparent] all about names

My family and friends have always called me Barb. Some of my friends I've
gained since adulthood call me Barbara. When I was a Freshman in college we
had four Barbaras on my floor so I chose to be Barbara. I've introduced
myself to everyone as Barbara because I now do prefer it but you know how
people are. At least they don't call me Barbie. That got you slapped when
I was a child. Guess I must have even told someone once that if my mom
wanted a Barbie doll she'd have gone to the store and bought one.

I like all the names you mentioned and no matter what we call our children,
someone will change the name to fit their needs. Gabriella seems easy
enough, however lots call her Gabriel or Gabrielle and I am forever saying
her name is Gabriella or when they say the name I say La. For years I had
friends call me ronni which I absolutely hated and until a few years ago, my
friend's mom still called me that. Habits are hard to break. I prefer just
V over Ronni.

Veronica,
my daughter's name is Dominika.
School always called her "D."
And, her father's friends always called her father "D." they have the
same first initial.
(smile) We called her "MIN," at home.
And, her youngest brother is named "Kyler," and most people call him "KY."

As long as we are talking about names:

We have decided that our child will have a Pakistani first name and an
American Middle name.
there is actually a pakistani name "Shabnab."
it is pronounced "Shubnub." [i have spelled it in a way that JAWS
pronounces it correctly]
i think it is one of the worst names ever.
i told my family that I would name our daughter "shabnab," just so
they would be ok with the name i really chose. hahaha.
pakistani names are not like American names.
Even when i think that i have found a name: DH says: "No, you pronounce
it....."
So,
"Nayara," is pronounced "Nyaera."
"Aliya," is pronounced "Ahlia."
"Najia," is pronounced "Naajia" -- accent on the first syllable.
He doesn't like Jameela, Maia, Zartasha or Samina.
He suggested Faiza, Iram, or others that i don't remember because I hated
them.
I think that we have settled on "kiran," for a girl. but, i'll have
to spell it "Kiryn."
I hate Unisex names and there are boys named "kiran." the
pronounciation is different, though.
The way Jaws pronounces "kiran," is the way that most boys pronounce
their names. when i write "kiryn," Jaws pronounces it correctly.
Yet, I still feel that there will be boys with the same name.
I would use an "A" name, but our last name begins with an "A" and I
didn't want the alliterations.
But, that means that there is no nickname. We'll have to make up one
that fits her personality.
i am considering Gabrielle for the middle name.
But, i am not sure, yet.
Pronunciation is a big thing for me.
for a boy, i have considered "Zarion." But, i would want it
pronounced "Zahrionne" -- accent on the last syllable, which is
exactly the way pakistanis pronounce it.
and, you know that his friends will call him "Z."

Well, just food for thought.

With Dominika, my mother started calling her "giggles," and that is on
some of her early baby pictures. the problem is that she was only
3days old. My daughter had never "giggled" at the time. my mother just
didn't like the name "dominika."
So, be careful what you choose.
some people jst like shortening names: Alexander never gets called
his real name.
i was going to name "dominika," "Alexandria," or "Antonia," but I did
not want her to be called "Alex" or "Toni."
but, that is just my little petpeev.
