And blind or sighted you will know.  My daughter swallowed a safety pin when 
she was about six months old.  She choked a little bit and then nothing but 
continous crying.  As we couldn't drive we ended up calling 911 and when the 
emt's got there they thought I was crazy.  They didn't see anything in her 
throat.  They were refusing to take me to the hospital.  I got a little um 
angry and demanded that they take us.  The safety pin had come open and 
lodged down in her tonsils that's why it took an x-ray to find it.  She was 
my first child, I was only 20 years old, and I knew, knew that she wasn't 
acting right, so always go with your instincts too, you know your child 
better than anyone else, if something's not right, you will know it.

You know, when I got pregnant and my brother and sister wanted me to give
the baby up for one of them to raise, my sister's biggest example of why I
couldn't be a good blind parent was that her little girl had put a coin in
her mouth at age two or three, and the only way her husband knew about it
was because the kid was making funny faces.  But Sarah is now nearly three
and a half, and if she's ever swallowed anything that I don't know about, it
hasn't caused her any trouble.  It's pretty obvious by sound when a child
has something in his or her mouth.  As to what your baby will get into, just
decide now that you aren't going to prevent every little thing, and save
yourself a lot of stress.  You do the best you can.  When your baby gets
into something like dog food or poop or dirt from your houseplants--I've had
experience with all three-you clean him up and move on.  If it's worse than
that, you call 911 or get to an emergency room, and after that, you move on.
It wouldn't hurt to take a class at the hospital so you know what to do if
the baby gets something lodged in his airway, or stops breathing, but you
can't stress about it or you'll go right out of your mind.  As your baby
gets older, teach him to show you what he has in his hands when you ask him
to, and that will help.
