[blparent] baby mobility

Many moons ago my niece came to spend the summer with us. She was out in
the backyard with my 2 huskies and I knew she was safe. For one the gate
was locked and for 2 the dogs wouldn't let anyone near her. She was
probably about 4. Well I came out calling her name and she didn't reply. I
called and called, but neither she nor the dogs came to me. I started to
panic. I came back in the house where I had been, thought maybe they had
snuck in, but didn't know why I couldn't or didn't hear them. No one in the
house, I went out the front door and over to the gate and it was still
locked up tightly.
So I went back in the yard and called again. Then she appeard with the 2
dogs. My heart was pounding and I asked her, "where were you?"
Well, she said, me and the dogs were cleaning out there dog house!" You
wanna come in with us?
Now it's funny, but then, not!

Hey great idea, never thought about teaching my dog to find the baby, might
have to work on that one, we have a huge, huge backyard and now have a
swingset and a little pool back there but there is still lots of space for
my LO to get lost in, might have to teach my SE dog to find him!! Wonderful
idea *smile*, thanks!

My husband and I just got gates for the stairs and we're even going to get a
gate to block off the whole office space since there are too many hazards in
there to count. Our next step is outlet covers, corner guards for sharp
edges on furniture and locks and latches on cabinets and toilets. Dawson
isn't quite crawling yet but he's rolling everywhere and beginning to launch
himself when he gets himself onto his hands and knees. It's right around
the corner and like all parents, I'm not ready for this! SMILING I've even
got some bells that I know will come out when he does start crawling all
over the house, and I'm even considering putting one of those key finders on
him when he's really cruising around the house. This way I can find him
even when he's totally still. I also plan on rewarding him with praise when
he verbally informs me where he is when I call for him but that can't be
done until he's old enough to understand the concept. Something that I've
begun doing which is working great is I am rewarding my guide dog with a
food reward and verbal praise whenever he finds Dawson. This was an easy
concept for the dog to ketch onto and they both love the game.
Happy crawling Zack!

Assume you can see nothing and go from there.
Seriously, even if you have some vision, you can't use it at all times.
Nobody can.
Also, you have three prongs you need to hit, being aware of what the kid
has, getting to your child, and getting to your child ina timely fashion.
You can do none of this if you are say, in the shower.
As for other places, that depends on where you're going and if you trust
whoever may be around you to give you accurate feedback. Remember just
because you like someone doesn't mean their feedback is accurate.
Also, know that you can always get down on the floor and be right behind
your child if need be. It's exausting but you can do this.
I assume you know that chords are a strangulation hazzard and certain
furniture can tip ina real bad way. If this is news to you, ping the list
and we'll help.

I know about baby proofing and I am doing that. I'm worried about him
getting things that I can't see. He has already put little rocks in his
mouth at the swimming pool (which I found when I heard them clicking against
his teeth). I am also worried about when I take him to places away from
hom. I can baby proof forever, but what about other places?
