[blparent] New Here With Questions

Hi,

I didn’t know that! I knew the seatbelt was safe enough but I didn’t know that the base doesn’t make it anymore secure. What a pain the base is anyway, heavy and bulky, and doesn’t fit in the bottom of a stroller.

The car seat is held by the seatbelt. So you use the seatbelt through the
slots, and then pull the seatbelt all the way out till the seatbelt does the
locking thing and pull it as tight as it can go. Once it is as tight as it
can go you bring the shoulder strap back across and back through the slots
and it keeps the seatbelt stable. A car seat check point showed me how to do
it because we were concerned about not having a base. Traveling with the
base is for the convince of not needing to fuss with getting it tight. You
can get the base tight, and then put the seat on top. It is far more work
and doesn't add safety. It is there because parents don't secure the car
seat tight every time so the if the base stays in the car the hope is that
the child will be safe.

Bran,
I didn't know that fact about bases. I was always told that if the car seat
required a base it was best to purchase an additional base or use the
original one. If you don't use a base, what more than the seatbelt will keep
the car seat stable?

I just do 2 and a half scoops for 5 ounces, and most 5 ounce bottles
actually hold 5-6 ounces depending on the brand. You don't need a blender,
but can actually just shake it really well or use anything slender to mix in
the bottle. No you don't need a base. Just use the slots on the top sides of
the car seat to thread the seatbelt over the baby while the baby is rear
facing. A base is just extra weight and not any safer.

I'd just buckle the seat in via the belt. You can do this, and a base is
just one more thing you'd need to carry with you.
As for measuring formula, are you wanting to know how to measure the number
of ounces or the scoops? I ask because I used the powdered kind and the
ratio of powder to water was what mattered, not so much the ounces. You also
need to make sure that the powder and water are mixed uniformly. My solution
was to mix it in a blender. I took the same size container and mimixed. I
think the ratio was one part powder to two parts water. The size of the
device doesn't matter, it's the ratio that does. Then I'd blend it all in
the blender like you'd do with a milk shake.
Babies won't overeat, nor will they let themselves starve. You'll know by
their behavior and diaper output if they are getting what they need.
If it's easier for you, just fill the four ounce bottles. Then when he's
ready for the sixounce jobs, he'll let you know.
If you get any push back from the doctor or grandma or whoever remind them
that moms that nurse don't get ametric on number of ounces consumed either.

If you still want a metric (I did for quite some time, though I now realize
it was wasted energy) try using the Playtex bottles. There are notches in
them. I found these bottles to be more of a pain, but you may disagree.

Hello Listers:
I am so glad to come across this site!
I am a first time mother of a seven week old boy and am adjusting pretty
well to motherhood.
When I return to work in a few weeks, I will be traveling by taxi cab and
wanted to know if I should buy an additional base for the car seat. I
already have one that is in my mother's car since she does most of the
driving for me.

I also had questions about measuring formula. My baby takes 4 ounces, and
all of the bottles that I have are either 4 ounces of 9 ounces. He will be
graduating to five ounces and I wanted to know how to measure out five
ounces.
Look forward to your responses.
Thanks
Janel
