[blparent] breast pump recommendations please?

I personally would not buy a used consumer grade pump, unless it was from
someone I knew. My wife has the Medela pump in style, and has used it
through 2 kids so far. She has only had 1 incident of the milk backing up in
to the pump. I do not recall why it happened, but it did. To help make your
decision, you might want to check in to the cost of replacement parts for
them as well. I know my wife's Medela has a filter she needs to change every
so often, not sure if the ameda purely yours ultra your looking at also has
regular maintenance that needs done or not. Also, I would be curious as the
the bottles that will fit the pumps. I would also be concerned with
something that has been boxed up for about 5 years.

Either way you go, I would clean it very well, and possibly get new tubing
and stuff for it.

Michael

Hi,

I've heard that as well, and personally I like the ameda pump better for
exactly the reasons you stated. I think my main concern was the used verses
new pump, and the older verses newer pump. Is it better to get an older
pump if it's never been used, or is it better to use a pump that's been used
if it's a newer pump? Hope this makes sense.

Tammy

Hi Tammy,

I haven't used the pump yet, but I opted for the Purely Yours Ultra, partly
because it has a closed system. This means that milk cannot come into
contact with the motor at all. This is not the case with the Medela
consumer-grade pumps. I read a review from someone who took her Medela apart
and found mold on the motor, and that clenched it for me. I'm sure this is a
very, very rare issue. But I decided I'd at least try the Ameda, since I
know I will not have that problem. You also don't have to clean the tubing
on the Ameda pump after each use--again, because milk can't enter it.

Having said all that, I'm very interested to hear what others have to say
about these different pumps. I would definitely like to know if others have
tried both and found one to be far superior.

Angie
