My sister's cat was declawed and that silly cat started biting and it could
indeed climb a tree, using it's rear claws and hugging the tree, it went
right up.  They never take out the rear claws.

If you decide to keep the cat and declaw it just that the cat will be 
defenseless if it ever got outside even in your backyard
.  It will no longer defend itself from other cats, dogs, and other wild 
animals.  It will no longer be able to climb a tree to get out of danger.
