Here is another home-made playdough recipe thatI ran across today that is
kid safe. You could add food coloring.

Oatmeal Playdough

2 cups rolled oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup water at room temperature

Place the flour and oats in a bowl, and add about half of the water. Mix
with a spatula or wooden spoon. Add a little more water, and when it starts
to become tough to stir, start using your hands to knead the mixture into a
dough. This is just like making a bread dough or a pizza dough - the
quantities of flour and water aren't exact, so you can add a little more of
either to get the consistency you want. Once you've kneaded all the flour
in, and the dough is the consistency you want, store it in an airtight
container in the refrigerator. This playdough doesn't have any preservatives
in it, so it will probably only keep for a week or so.
