Yes, animals will do this too.  My mother-in-law had a misjevious cat who
climbed in both her washer and drier when she wasn't looking and they were
opened so she has to be extra careful now.

I also have kept my dryer door closed, I have read scary stories about kids
that climb in when they are warm and then parents don't know kids are in it
and turn it on.  Sounds illogical, but it happens.

I have always kept the lid on the washer closed while its in use.
