[blparent] children drowning in shallow water

Yes, this is so true in so many situations. I have done this type of thing a
lot, and though it means I don't get to socialize with other parents it does
mean I know where mykids are, and can actually share a lot of experiences
with them I wouldn't have gotten to share in the same way otherwise. The
trick is knowing when it's all right to let kids have a little more freedom
and when to be that more protective parent and stay with them. I have
sometimes found this to be a tough balance. I'm very thankful for my
husband because he is a little more relaxed about this type of thing and
often helps me feel more secure with letting go a bit more in certain
situations.

I do think sometimes being with sighted people can give us a false sense of
security. I was at the sixth birthday party of my cousin's daughter last
summer, and it was at a water park. I was sitting in a chair at the side of
the pool, but I got tired of asking people if they could see Sarah and
having them say no, not right off the bat, there's so many kids, and then
having my heart in my throat till they located her. So I put on my suit and
got in the water, staying right with her. I was exhausted by the end of the
day, but we had a great time. Some of the parents asked why I got in, and I
just said I felt safer knowing right where Sarah was.
