[blparent] teaching our children to swim and ride bikes

I have a distrust of instructors because it was the licensed instructor who
threw Gab into the deep water. I never had an instructor do that to me.

We live in a different time and it is scary to let your kid ride on the
street. I live on a paved road with lots of traffic. Though, not a
thoroughfair, still a busy road. I tried to get her on that bike, but when
we took the training wheels off (never should of put them on) she was
terrified of it.
I guess I was a tough kid and she is not.
By the time Gab came about, my mother was 78 and very very protective of
this little girl.
I also had brothers to keep up with, gab had no one.

Rebecca, I can swim in shallow water as well as deep, I can waterski on one
ski or 2 and even without sight, I can ride a bicycle. No fear. What I
should of done, but didn't!

Interesting that your mom's swimming way worked for you, but you have a deep
mistrust of swimming instructors.

Your mom's way worked for riding a bike, yet you didn't have Gab try it.

I'm thinking your mom's ways didn't work so well, otherwise you'd have done
both with your daughter?

Like when we were kids, there were no life jackets to keep us afloat, but
swimming lessons at a public or private pool. I had swimming lessons
beginning when I was in first grade, that's how they did it then. We had a
blow up pool when we were kids in our backyard and we'd sit and splash. No
floaties. My mom and my aunts sat next to the pool to keep us safe.
As for the bikes, we learned on a dirt road without helmets or knee pads.
You either learned the first time or you'd scrape the ehck out of your knees
and elbows.
I know I did Gab an injustice by protecting her from the bicycle, but is it
too late for her to learn?

MAYBE YOUR CONCERN IS RIGHT ON. I KNOW THAT i DIDN'T WANT MARK TO GET HURT
PARTLY BECAUSE i DIDN'T WANT QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER WE WERE TAKING CARE OF
HIM PROPERLY BUT THAT HAS TO BE MEASURED AGAINST WHETHER IN THE LONG RUN IT
HURTS OUR KIDS.
