[blparent] placement of bells for crawling baby

I suppose every parent who uses diaper pins has their own story to tell
about them.
I personally didn't run into any terrible consequences and used them
regularly for the first 4 years of both my boys lives. I personally can't
envision other anxious moms allowing their precious offspring to play with
the pins for more than the time it takes to run and grab the baby. That
being said I think at least one pin did get stepped on at the play ground
when my youngest child was 3 or so because it stopped working like a diaper
pin and behaved more like a regular safety pin. After that my 3 year old
kept taking the pin off and handeing it to me and I had to be very firm
about using it. My biggest complaint with diaper pins is that they were very
difficult for me to find. Diaper pins weren't a popular baby item at
walmart.
Sometimes I used the 3 inch zip ties from the automotive section to secure
the bells to a pin or through a lace hole on a shoe. Sometimes I threaded
the pea sized bells around the spiral in the diaper pin and they stayed
securely between the pin head and the spiral.
I liked having different bells for different purposes because I am very
sensitive to noise. The little cow bells that the guide dog school gives out
has a ring that caries extremely well on the play ground.
Happy parenting,
Eileen

I used a diaper pin and attached between the shoulder blades and it didn't
harm her when she rolled over. The bell is just big enough for me to hear
but not big enough to harm her. What I am wondering though, will other
kiddos play with that bell. V

Hi everyone,
I take my 10-month-old son to a Gymboree class once a week where he has the
freedom to crawl around a very large room. Up until last week, he hasn't
been crawling very far from me but this last week, he started crawling too
far for me to hear where he went. Luckily I had my father-in-law with me
that day but now I know it's time to attach bells. I know we've discussed
this on list before, like using zip ties to attach bells to shoes, but where
do you attach bells to the clothing of a crawling baby? I was thinking I
would attach it to his back somewhere but others have said that he might
roll over on to the bell and hurt himself. I don't want it to be within his
reach to play with it. Also, I was thinking of using a safety pin to attach
the bell but clearly this is not the most safe thing ever. What else have
you used to attach bells to clothing when the child is not wearing shoes?
Just as a clarification, this is only for when we go to playdates or places
oher than home, because at home I have no problem with him crawling
everywhere.
Thanks so much.
Ronit
