[blparent] kids and the park

Steff, a few years ago Gab and her friend were running on the sidewalk at
the park and Gab tripped and slammed her head into the side of the drinking
fountain. The girl that was with her ran home, across the street and came
with her mom. Well you know I was freaking out, blood dripping from Gab's
head and her elbow. I only had a bottle of water and my sweater. I poured
a little water on the sleeve and dabbed her head and by that time the mom
had come running with water, a wash cloth and various sizes of bandaids and
the keys to her car.
Gab only had a small scrape on her head but a huge bump but her elbow was
bloody, but nothing serious. But I do know how you feel, you just never
know.
The good thing about the park close to my house, there is almost always lots
of kids and parents and I'm sure I would be able to ask them for help if
needed.
I really don't like being there when it is deserted, so if we get there and
no one is there we might play for a tiny bit, but come back home sooner than
not. I am a chicken and don't like to be in empty places like that.
Now you have to realize, it is usually only my daughter and I, but if she
had siblings, it might be different. Safety in numbers. V

I was thinking of more serious injuries, like breaking an arm or something.
Of course the kids have had scrapes every now and again.

Your oldest kid is eight years old. Your middle one is five.
Why does this worry you so much?
Certainly both the older ones have gotten a few scrapes and bruises now and
then?
I'm sorry, I just don't know how to be nice about this. I guess I'm just
amazed your older kids have lived this long and haven't had the oppertunity
to fall off a slide or tried to jump off a swing while it's in motion.
Are there other issues going on?

I was thinking along the lines of injury or falling.

Something happening as in what exactly?
I ask because lots of things *might* happen, most won't.
Can you pinpoint what exactly beyond "something might happen" has you
worried?

All the kids are sighted. I guess it's my fear of something happening that
holds me back.

Are your children sighted? If you go and get a general idea of the park
layout when you don't have all of them with you, that might help.
The older
ones will be handy to keep track of the baby, especially if they know to
come when you call them. If you take the toddler by him- or herself, you
could follow along closely or put bells on the shoes, or a box of Tic-Tacs
in a pocket so you can track that way.

 I have a almost 5 year old and a 8 year old, and a 16 month old.
One of
the things that has really bugged me is going out with the kids.
I'd
never had the guts to take them to the park. I'd wanted too, but am not
sure how I would keep a track on them all, esspecially when I don't know
the lay out etc. So, do any of you do this? If so, how?
 Thanks,
 Steph
