[blparent] an update (kids & meds)

I also feel that many on this list have made the generalization that all
parents who put their kids on ADHD meds are bad parents, or too lazy to try
other approaches like talk therapy or behavior modification. I have been
very upset and disturbed by the generalizations made on this list. My
stepson has been on ADHD meds for quite a long time, as part of a program
which also includes therapy and at-school support. Without the meds, he
couldn't be functioning in the school environment and wouldn't be getting an
education. It isn't just that he's a bundle of energy and we don't want to
keep up with him, believe me. Until you all have lived with a kid who has
ADHD and is truly out of control, you don't know how hard it is for the
parents or the kids. We don't need to be judged. We don't need to be
looked down on for having kids on meds. Sometimes, making the difficult
decision to put a child on medication is the best thing we can do for the
child, and until you've been there, it's not only unhelpful, but also
uncalled for, to talk badly about parents who are.

compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of
