Kids are so resilient, aren't they? I hear you about having your hubby
there for events such as this and besides it's an awesome time for them to
get to enjoy with the kids as well.
Take care,
Erin

Hi Erin. I know you're right about brushing it off. Goodness sakes,
then just yesterday my son came to me and said he had blood all over his
hand from when he hurt it while we were trick or treating! I didn't even
know he hurt himself! I guess that wasn't a big deal. Smile. I guess it was
just the night for injuries. My husband was working night shift Halloween
night so he wasn't with us. I told him next year to please put in for
Halloween night off because this is just too much stress! Smile.

Yes, don't feel bad Jeri because this happens to all of us. As for not
finding the bump right away, those things don't pop-up right off the bat
often times and surface a little later when the blood pools in the area.
There have been several times when my son gets hurt and my sighted husband
if around tells me that he doesn't see any marks, only to discover a little
later that a goose egg has popped-up. In just September my son who's only 2
was playing at the beach. He tripped in the sand and fell face first onto a
rock and cracked one of his front teeth. We felt awful especially when we
discovered that he'll need some dental work on that tooth, but sometimes in
life we have to not only brush our kids off and kiss their booboos but our
very own emotional ones because it often times bothers us more than the kid
even gave it a thought. I totally know how you feel though, especially when
it comes to any kind of head injury. I jokingly tell my son that he has to
go to medical school with that head so he can't knock it around too much!
SMILING
Have a great night.
Erin

Believe me, I know. My brother is starting to tell people in the family,
once again, that I'm not taking care of my daughter well because three out
of the last four times he has seen her, she's had a scrape or bruise on her
face. What he isn't saying is that he's only seen her four times since last
Christmas. The first time, she tried to tightrope walk on the arm of a
rocking chair and got a rug burn when she took a header onto the carpet.
I'd told her dozens of time that it wasn't safe to stand on the arm of the
chair, and sent her to sit on the stairs in time-out over and over. After
she got the rug burn, she also got the message and didn't try that trick
again. Her second bump happened because she was hiding behind her bedroom
door instead of sleeping in bed like she was supposed to, and her dad pushed
the door open to check on her. The knob caught her just right, and she got
a shiner. Then she bumped her face on the playground at school, not even
badly enough to tell the teacher or stop playing. Still, when my brother
started in, I sure didn't feel very competent or pleased with myself.
Fortunately, nobody is really listening to him very much. He has a foster
child who is approaching his third birthday, so in the next year or so,
he'll start to figure out that kids just get bumps and scrapes and bruises,
and the best you can do is kiss them and let them go on with their little
daredevil lives. In fact, my pediatrician said if she saw a child with no
minor battle scars, she would wonder if the kid was active enough. So let
it roll off--it has bothered you a whole lot longer than it did your
daughter.

Hi Jo Elizabeth. Thank you. She's doing great today. In fact, when I kissed
her on her head today she started cracking up. I'm feeling better about it,
it's just rough sometimes.

Jeri, please don't get down on yourself for this. Like you said yourself,
it could have happened to anybody, and it has happened to anybody who has
parented a child through the toddler years. Your daughter is going to be
fine. You were there for her, putting ice on her bump as soon as you knew
about it, and that will be enough. A month hardly goes by that my daughter
doesn't have a scrape or a bruise on her face. I know it feels bad, but
perk up and keep forging ahead.

Hi everyone. I hope you all had a safe and fun Halloween. We had fun but
something happened and I'm feeling awful about it. Katlyn, my daughter, was
running back to meet me at the end of a drive way, she was so cute, giggling
away all excited that she got some candy. She missed the little bump at the
end of the driveway and fell. She hit her head pretty hard. I immediately
picked her up and was feeling all over her face for any bumps or blood. I
didn't feel anything so I just told her that she was going to be ok and we
moved on, but she cried for quite a while. When she stopped crying she just
told me that her hand was hurting. My friend that was with us only saw a
little scrape on her hand, but nothing on her face. Well, later after we
were home she was crying because she didn't want to go to bed. I was
brushing her hair out of her eyes and felt it. A large goose egg bump right
above her eyes! I felt terrible that I hadn't felt it earlier in the night.
She probably had such a head ache which also explains her grumpy mood.
Normally Kate loves to play with everyone, but after she fell she just
stayed really winey. We had a late night together on the couch with ice on
her head. She's doing fine today, but I'm just feeling bad about it. I know
this can happen to anyone sited or not, but naturally I feel bad because I
couldn't see it. Maybe it's my turn to feel sorry for myself today. Have any
of you experienced something like this as well?
Jeri
