[blparent] shopping on line question

Jeri,
You are using a computer that is older then God with software that predates the Stone Age.
In previous posts you have mentioned wanting an Iphone, and you mention your pool, a swing set, and playhouses that are expensive.
I don't know if a new computer is in your budget. Often "what's in the budget" depends on how you approach the situation.
You simply can't make your old system perform any better then it already is. There are eight upgrades to JFW since you purchased yours, and there have been many more upgrades within each version.
The fact that you're still using a very outdated version of JFW suggests that your needs are not given the priority they should be, especially when you mention the pool, the playhouse, the swing-set things like that.
You stay home with your kids, so yes, your husband controls the resources way more so then if that wasn't the case. If you were happy with your current computer, you wouldn't be posting.
If you read my note carefully you'd see that I offered two options for you re funding this bad boy, one is to approach a Lions Club, another is to talk with a state voc rehab agency. Both will ask you to justify your request. "buying stuff for my kids" is not the way to get either organization to take you seriously. They will respond with "If you want to buy stuff for your kids, then save up or reallocate funds".
You are simply not going to get more out of your old computer and old JFW.
As for the Geek Squad, they are good folks. It is worth noting that if you felt they didn't serve you well, you have options to explore that too. Many people poop their pants when you bring something they've never seen before. I can just about guarantee you they've never seen a computer talk. It isn't outside the scope of possibilities that the geek you dealt with pooped his pants and told you "I can't fix it" because in his head a "talking computer" is not what he's trained to deal with.

Hi. Um, well I don't really understand why this thread has gone this
direction. I'm not complaining about the geek squad at Best Buy. Fact is, my
Jaws is ancient. I was looking for advice on how to shop on line. Thanks for
the advice. I'm not asking for advice on how to deal with my husband on
this. My husband is not the problem. My husband and I do not have problems.
It's not a matter of whether or not my husband wants to buy it. I don't
understand why you went there with it. please don't make assumptions about
my marriage and our finances. I wasn't asking for advice on that. I don't
need to take over the bill paying. What are you talking about? Yes, we have
priced new systems. Right now it's not an option. I don't need to think
about this like a man would. This has nothing to do with how a man would
make a purchase. Maybe you think a lot of men are like that, but my husband
is not. I know what needs to be done in order to purchase a new system. I'm
asking for advice on what to do with what I have. I appreciate everyone's
advice and I appreciate those giving me advice without taking it farther
than that. I'm ready to end this thread.

Jeri,
I don't know what you want to hear. I don't know what geek you talked to at
Geek Squad but I am assuming he (or she) was operating in good faith. If you
think otherwise speak with a manager.
Have you really looked at prices for computers? I ask this sincerely. They
have come down a whole heck of a lot.
Have you talked with a state rehab agency or a Lions Club? They may help you
too.
Lastly, are you viewing this as "something for mom" or "something for the
family"? That makes a big difference. If this was something your husband
wanted how would he approach it? Most men don't bat an eyelash when it comes
to new toys especially if it's under a grand and they can justify it as a
family purchase, even if we all know the purchase is mostly for them. So
think like a guy on this one.
If that doesn't work, offer to do something your husband will appreciate
maybe take over all the bill paying?
You've got many ways to solve this.
You also have the "do nothing" option. You can always choose to use that one
too.

Ya, I would sure like to do that, but you know as well as I do that they
aren't cheap.

Go to Walmart and get a laptop.
Call Freedom Scientific so you're current on JAWS.
Just because I'm curious, how old is your system?

Hi Dave. I was wondering about that. I think you're right about the virus
part. It's driving me nuts though. We took my computer into see the geek
squad at Best Buy (yes that's what they call themselves) and they said that
my system is so old, that they can't help me. Oh, they were going to try,
but no guarantees. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I can think of at least two possible problems, it could be that your old
version of JAWS doesn't know how 'to deal 'with things on the web page, and
or you may have some sort of virus or malware. That kind of delay isn't
normal. Dave
