[blparent] Sewing (was Diffusing Temper Tantrums)

Hi Jo Elizabeth. My mom and I use to take a quilting class together.
I like to sew everything by hand as using a sewing machine is way beyond me.
I sure wish I could though. I have hand sewn small quilted wall hangings and
have started on more than one blanket. I don't do the entire things start to
finish, meaning I don't cut out the pieces and match them up, which is
called paper piecing. I do however do the sewing part of it all. I find it
to be very relaxing. When it comes to fixing stuffed animals or sewing on
buttons, I can do it, but usually I give those to grandma. Don't ask me why!
Lol. I've also hand sewn miniature Christmas stockings for the tree and
created some little ornaments. I don't get to do it as much now that I'm so
busy during the day and then I turn into a pumpkin around nine o'clock at
night.

My mom used to sew most of the clothes for my sister and me, especially our
Christmas and Easter dresses. She used to hire out to do costumes for
school plays, wedding dresses, band uniforms, that kind of thing. But she's
also said that the prices of patterns, unless you look for them in thrift
stores, which many do carry them, and the price of fabric, have turned a
moneymaking venture into a hobby for her.
I stick to sewing up stuffed animals that get wounded, or occasionally
patching up a pair of jeans or cutting them off and hemming them to make
shorts. Dry cleaners will even alter clothes, although that gets expensive.

Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may
kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at
evening.--Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

Jodi,
I've had the same issues with sewing.
Unless you really want to learn to do this, there is no need. Dry cleaners
will sew things, we had a dry cleaner sew up a hole in my daughter's
favorite blanket.
They will also fix zippers and sew on buttons, though with kids clothes,
it's often cheaper to just throw out the article of clothing and get a new
one usually in whatever size the child is now wearing.
It really isn't economical to sew anymore either given that fabric and
patern prices are much higher then they used to be.
My mom sews and loves it. She's the one that pointed out the economics of it
(it used to be economical, now it isn't).
Nothing stopping you from learning how to sew if you would like, though from
your post it sounds like you only care from a "what if" perspective. In my
mind that isn't enough reason to want to do it. It's like saying "I should
learn how to fix my washing machine in case it breaks down" when given the
complexity of washing machines, it's easier and cheaper to call a repairman.

Jo Elizabeth, your mention of Nanna teaching Sarah to sew got me curious.
You were afraid she'd say, "because Mom can't see to do it,"
and you said you don't enjoy it, but can you sew? I can't sew to save my
life! I can't even thread a needle. An ADL instructor tried hard to teach
me, but with a complete and total lack of success. It wasn't her fault; I
just couldn't get my fingers to do what I needed them to do.
I'm hoping someday to buy and learn how to use a sewing machine in case I
ever need to sew something for Kahlan.
