[blparent] Blind Parenting

The times I had to deal with CPS, my being Blind wasn't even brought up.
All they wanted to do was check that my children were safe and I asked the
worker what was considered acceptable conditions for a home because I was
curious. I was told that all you need is a place for each child to sleep
this does not have to be their own bed. I was told each child had to have
basic clothing. They didn't care how it looked. I was told as long as you
weren't living in filth, and if there was clutter it didn't block fire
exits, and you had food, like bread sandwich meet, water, milk, then your
kids were fine as long as they had no signs of abuse like massive bruising,
weren't afraid of room mates or other care givers, and if you were some
where cold you had heat and running water and electricity a majority of the
time.

Not hard to meat. For what its worth I was told point blank they don't care
what's up with the parent as long as you care for your kid. There is not a
coalition of social workers out to take well cared for children from the
disabled; there are already too many kids in the system.
That's what I was told for what its worth and I still have my kids.

My mom worked in CPS for a time.
This was her common complaint, many of the social workers did not have
children of their own. They simply. Did. Not. Get. It.

Hi Tammy:

I couldn't agree more with you. I think social workers get too much into
everybody's business. The thing that is really annoying for me also, is
that most of them don't even have children of their own. They go by a
textbook that they learned from in school and think that every family is
supposed to be textbook perfect and that every child should be a certain
way. I have met very few social workers who have children. They may be
textbook educated, but when it comes to actually raising a child, it is
totally different.

For one thing, the last time I checked, there was no instruction manual
attached to the umbilical cord when the baby is born. You give birth to the
baby and then you are expected to raise them for the next 18 years or so.
If we all had textbooks about raising children attached to the umbilical
cord, I'm sure that there would be no such thing as CPS involvement.

Lastly, I thought that the whole purpose of Child Protection Services was to
protect children from abuse and maltreatment and not from disabled parents.
I just feel that this CPS thing has gotten out of hand.
