You are supposed to rinse the diapers before you wash them. You don't
actually have lumps of poop. Just explaining why you are getting the
response not taking sides. Some people also use cloth diaper services.

Hey Jenifer, I know far too well about the little bit of yuck that ends-up
in a wash but I think you know that I'm referring to the actual poop piles
swimming around in the washer.  It's just not for me and if you feel that
cloth diapers in your washer are perfectly clean than good for you.  It
probably comes out clean if hot enough water is used and the right detergent
is used but I personally don't feel comfortable with that and that's okay.

I agree with Jo Elizabeth about everyone being supportive. Though I do find
the idea that one extra load every two or three days makes anyone a slave to
the washing machine a little silly. :) Also Erin, I hate to break it to you
but as the mother of three little boys, I can assure you that you have had
fecal matter in your machine. :) They are just not very good about wiping
even after they are refusing to let you help. Thus the common phrase "skid
marks" in reference to men's underwear.

I second what Jo Elizabeth is saying here and it's important that we all
just support one-another because this is not an issue of ethics but rather
personal preference for our individual lives.  As a nurse I met once put it
so beautifully, "cloth diapers verses disposable is something that probably
comes neck-to-neck in the end when it comes to what's best for the
environment.  On one hand there is energy wasted with cloth diapers  because
the washer has to be run a lot more often and chemicals have to be used to
clean those diapers.  Also, one must rid of the baby's waist by flushing the
toilet more often and on the other hand  disposable diapers are going into
land-fills."  I personally could never get used to the idea of fecal matter
going into my washing machine while friends of mine have no problem with it
and swear by it.  My boy might go into cloth training pants once we get
serious about potty-training but I wouldn't do it to just try and go green.
There are so many other ways I  conserve energy and try to be green that
this is not one I'm going to feel bad about because it's what is best for
us.

Michael, it's easy to tell that cloth diapering is very important to you. 
That's great.  But it doesn't work for everyone, and that doesn't make those
of us who didn't choose to do it guilty of causing a throwaway society. 
Between my job and the rest of my commitments, I decided I couldn't be a
slave to my washing machine.  I did what worked for me.

Cloth diapers are sold in places like Wal*Mart and target. Not easy to find
usually, and not the best ones you can get either, but they are there. There
are also specialty cloth diaper stores, parenting stores, etc that sell them
in several cities. We even found some in a medical supply store. Was not
looking for them there, but there they were.

As they continue to grow in popularity, they will become available even more
places.

To bad we are such a throw away society.

I think more people would use cloth if they didn't require research. If I
could have just taped or snapped a cloth diaper on, I may have used them. I
don't know.
But I got lost with the prefolds, the covers, and the fact that you can't
just go buy them.
The user interface and aquisition of cloth sucks!
The messages on this list as helpful as they are bear this out.

I found that the Kirkland diapers worked as well as, sometimes better than,
any other brand I tried, and they were significantly cheaper.  I could order
them on Diapers.com and get free shipping.  It's a great Web site, and it
has a lot more than diapers.  The slogan is "We deliver everything but the
baby" and it's very true.  There are feeding supplies, toys, clothes, and
all sorts of other baby products for unbeatable prices.

I forgot to mention this. I agree with you about Luv's diapers. We had the
same problem with Target brand diapers. Before we started using cloth
diapers, we typically only used the Kirkland brand fo diapers; they worked
the best for us.
