I did the golf ball thing at my work's family day. Some of the kids were
totally into wanting to learn Braille and some could have cared less. It
really depends on the kid I think. If you feel they have to learn it, then
by all means make it nonnegotiable. I started reading this thread assuming
that learning Braille was voluntary for the child. If it isn't, then apply
your resources and make it happen.

Hi,

I started with just reading to them at first and letting them feel the
braille on the page. That was when they were really little, probably 1 or
so. Then I got a set of 6 golf balls and cut an egg carton so it looked
like a braille cell and taught them the alphabet using that. I taught them
the basic shapes of letters and what dots made what letter, and I let them
play around with their own configurations. Now that Remus is four he's
starting to use the brailler a bit and he is starting to figure out what
dots make what letters, and he likes writing little notes even though he
can't spell yet. I think he mostly uses his eyes to read and I don't have a
problem with that. I have covered Colyn's eyes a bit but it's a game to
him, I think he should use whatever senses he can to do whatever he can.

Hi,
What techniques did you use in teaching them braille? Did you start out the
same way as you learned braille or as a blind person learns braille? I am
asking because I am not sure when teaching a sighted child braille it helps
to start with something more than something else or cover their eyes so they
learn with their fingers, or something like that. Hope this makes since.
