[blparent] Potty training

Hi Melissa.
I think if I put a swimmer diaper on Kate, that may just upset her enough to
stop doing it. I don't want to do that to her though, but for obvious
sanitary reasons, I may have to right? She's definitely not happy about
having her bath toys taken away. The thing with Kate is that she doesn't
just do it once a day, she does it several times. She has seen the doc
before about this issue she has with holding it as long as she can stand it.
I'm glad to hear that it's not uncommon though. I know animals do it. I had
a ferret once that did it every time we gave her a bath! I didn't know my
daughter would do the same thing as my ferret!

Actually, this is pretty common. Yes, it is the warmth of the water and also
the relaxation many kids feel in the tub. Not having her linger in the tub
is probably a good idea. You could also try to give her a bath after she's
through with number two for the day... Might not work well, I know. Friends
of ours used to put a swimmer diaper on their son in the tub just in case.
It is definitely gross! Both of my older kids have done this. Luckily it has
not become a regular occurrence.

Hehehe, Jo Elizabeth, you made me laugh with the visual of you with a
sticker in your hair or rear. Even though I have no clue what you look like.
I just imagine Kate doing that to me, and she probably would do it.
Another little problem I'm having with Miss Kate is she keeps going potty
(number 2) in the bath. It's making me crazy! I think it has something to do
with the warmth of the water or something. So now, I don't allow her to have
any toys in the bath until she stops doing it. Dylan only did that one time
and he phreaked out and never did it again. Kate does it and then calmly
tells me she would like to get out of the tub. It took a while for me to
catch on. It's so gross! Have you heard of this happening before? At her
next doctor's appointment I'm going to ask about it.

Each kid is different. My daughter never gave two hoots about the stickers
and charts. Half the time, she'd stick the sticker on me without me
knowing, and I'd walk around with it on my butt or in my hair for hours
before I discovered it. Her thing was that she wanted to go to preschool,
and I wouldn't sign her up till she was trained because I wasn't about to
pay the extra fees for the class that still had diapering available. Once
she figured that out, it clicked in less than two weeks. Before that, she
just wasn't ready.

kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at

Hi.
With my son, the sticker potty chart that hung right next to the potty
worked great. He got a special sticker every time he used the potty. When he
started to use the potty for both types of pottying jobs, he would earn two
stickers. At the end of the row he would get candy. Bad for the teeth, but
hey it worked. Also, his first pair of underwear had Spider Man on them.
They were very special to him. The first time he went potty in his underwear
I said, "oh no, you pottied on Spider Man." He never had another accident.
With Kate, now she's been a bit more difficult. She's potty trained of
course, she's almost four, but it's been a real ordeal with her. She likes
earning stickers, but if she doesn't earn one it doesn't bother her much.
She's always sorry if she has an accident on the princesses or Minnie Mouse,
but she just tells me to wash them please. She still has accidents, but I'm
trying to be patient. Good luck to you.

out or what you mean by that.
> I found using a dog to be miserable after I had my daughter mostly because
the needs of a dog and the needs of a human, at least my human didn't fit
the same architecture. The kids need to be in bed, the dog needs a brisk
walk, no other adult is present, well the dog doesn't get the walk they
need.
> Or you are out all day, you stay out longer then expected, obtaining food
for the humans is easy, human food can be had anywhere, dog food less so.
>

> Going away to get your dog should be a piece of cake. Coming home on the
weekends should work very nicely. *Being* home with your dog and trying to
integrate the needs of everybody may be the tricky area.
> You know the personality of your kids, that's not something you can know
before you have a baby which is when I was a dog user. You can and should
tell the school what type of personality you need in a dog. How do your
kids feel about the dog? Has this been handed down to them from on high, or
have they invested in what you need to do? Is the older one willing to "keep
an eye on my brother" while you take the dog out to relieve? If not, you
will be worn out by a dog that needs to go potty outside and needs you to be
present while you have kids that need you inside and know you need to be
outside with the dog.
>
> You have a lot of things stacked in your favor. This can very easily work
for you. There is no way though that we can assure you that hings will be
ok with what you've written. I'm not even sure how you are defining
success. If you'r easking the list to reassure you that your husband and
kids won't burn down the joint while you're gone, yes, we can probably do
that. If you're asking "Will my kids, husband dog and I ride happily into
the sunset". No, there is no way any of us can assure you of that.
> Realize too that guide dog schools have been around forever. They aren't
going anywhere. If you try it and don't like it, now six months from now, or
whenever, it's fine. Nothing terrible will happen to you or your family. I
say this because nobody talks about this aspect and when they do it's with a
sense of shame. You don't need to feel that shame. Go and have fun and enjoy
the experience. There's nothing quite like your first dog. Let the future
take care of itself.
