My husband as well as another good friend love the Droid exactly for the reasons stated, they love being able to do what they want with it in terms of development.
Shannon if this is your thing, and your world will end because you can't do it, then you do want a Droid.
That doesn't sound like you. With the Iphone, you get what they give you.  This is fine for me. It would drive my husband and my friend up a wall.

The IPad is really a lot more accessible to the blind, and the OS is
much more straightforward than any android one.  Android is an
open-source OS, so anyone can develop software for it and the software
is not approved by any official source. That leaves the system more
room to be compromised by malicious software such as viruses.
The IPad already has VoiceOver build in and does not require you to get
any extra text to speech software in case you should need it.
You're really better off spending the extra money for a more durable,
higher-quality product.  Just my thoughts.
