Right on, Jennifer.  I have to pay attention to my own surroundings.  I
will not just go, when someone tells me to go.  I have to pay attention to
my parallel, (green,) and perpendicular, (red,) traffic.  What if someone
tells you and your child to go, and someone speeds into you unannounced? 
It is you that makes the decision, not the other person, Jo Elizabeth!  You
can't be a statistic on the local news.
