Jeffrey,
My husband says, "Put it on his butt," grin.
Seriously, changing a diaper isn't as difficult as you might think.
You can usually tell by smell if a diaper needs changing, but you also
can stick a finger in if not sure. Have a wipe on hand so if a poopy,
smile.
Make sure you have all necessary items set out in reach, but not in
reach of baby, though this won't be a concern just yet.
Pull the tabs away and stick them back together so when you remove the
diaper from underneath, they won't stick to anything and make a
potential mess.
If a poopy, swipe the diaper down between his legs and down his bottom
and fold over. Finish wiping with wipes that should be set out. I
usually can do just two wipes, but sometimes a bigger mess requires a
bit more cleaning.
Also, if a poopy, make sure it didn't go up the back.
If just a wet, one wipe should work.
For little boys, make sure you clean well around the penis and
testicles. For girls, do a swipe around and between the labia.
Dispose of the dirty diaper. I prefer a changing table and find it gives
me more manageability especially when they start moving a lot. We have a
diaper pail right next to the changing table, so we can just dump it in,
no pun intended, giggle.
Unfold the clean diaper and place underneath baby with the tabs facing
up and towards the back.
Don't worry about hurting baby because all movement is okay.
Fold the diaper up in front between the legs then pull the tabs apart
and pull around to stick to front of diaper. There should be about a
fingers-width between the tummy and diaper. Also make sure the diaper
goes up a bit high in the back to safeguard against messy poopies.
Ta-da, you're done, smile. Questions, you can email off-list at

My son was born just over twenty-four hours ago. I have yet to change
his diaper. I have never changed one. This is not because of blindness,
I just never had the desire too. Any tips or advice you guys could give
would be great.
Jeff
