Your dogged persistence is paying off. You go, girl.

Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may
kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at
evening.--Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

Subject: [blparent] potty success finally

Sorry guys, it's been forever since my last visit to this group. sooo busy.
Myles had a rough summer. As it turns out he had something wrong with his
large intestine, blocks in 2 places that have basically have been there
since birth. Anyway we tried all the docs suggestions and even a few of our
own based on research I had done regarding digestion. I struggle with it
myself so am a bit of an expert by now on the subject. Well we tried, stool
softeners twice, tried probiotics, high fiber diet, a serious butt load of
water and nothing. We finally gathered the church together for prayer and
the next day We asked him what he wanted to do wear pullups or undies. He
said undies so after play group the next day we put him in undies, the
first 2 days were pure torture, messy. In the eve of the 2nd day though he
finally started trying when he realized we wearn't going to give him a
pullup this time. Before we would always give and not bother. Well His BM'S
became normal the day we put him in undies. Before we were lucky to get him
to pee on the toilet even 1 time a day. in the last 3 days he's gone at
least 12 times and at least 4 of them were on his own. We started playing a
game called the diaper monster. He has to defeat the diaper monster by
making it to the toilet and when he does he gets an app sticker from the
signing time app or he gets a small piece of candy. If he succeeds for 3
full days of no accidents including poop he gets to wear undies even when
we go out places. Dad does not want to clean up away disasters. LOL. If he
goes a whole 2 weeks without accidents or at least without unnecessary ones
he gets either spiderman or batman undies to celebrate his winning the war
against the diaper monster. He loves a good competition. So far it's
working well and this is the most success we have had ever. I'm very
optimistic. He hasn't pooped in the can yet but, he is talking about it for
the first time ever. Thanks to "The Bear in the Big Blue House"" "When you
Have to Go" Myles Loves tutter's rush to the toilet when bear convinces him
it's ok to go when you need to even if your in the middle of something.
Myles gets soooo distracted. We just found him a second hand costume of
bear so he's been wearing that a lot and reenacting the whole show. This
was not only encouraged by prayer though I| am sure that's the main cause
but, We were getting pretty desperate, My son was changing his own wet
pullups without our knowledge and I'd find them in the the most random
places. We were literally going through a whole bag every 3 days and at $20
a bag that was way more then we could even remotely afford. SCARY!
Naturally when I realized what was happening I kinda had a meltdown of my
own. Part of me felt bad because Myles saw how upset I was and I think that
pushed him to choose to wear underwear. We try very hard not to get upset
over things concerning him in front of him but, I snapped after years of
such discouragement over the potty issue I guess I just couldn't hold it in
anymore. We especially try not to discuss money issues in his presence.
We're honest but, we don't want him to feel responsible for our financial
state. Though in a way he was for this one thing for sure, we don't want to
make him feel guilty over this stuff. I didn't freak at him just growled a
lot. LOL It worked regardless and he seems not to be phased by my emotional
reactions. We are both sooo reactionary. He may be adopted but, oh man is
his personality ever like mine. Either way we are finally conquering that
nasty diaper monster one step at a time.

As for school, we did start home schooling and he has learned to read a
couple words already, although he doesn't always cooperate. He is very
intelligent but, his natural tendency is towardd math and science, music
and baking. He would give up on the notion of reading altogether if I'd let
him. I found a couple great free online curriculum sites on of which is a
character based bible curriculum so he learns about good character traits
as well. This week is attentive go figure for such an active and distracted
boy. We had to put him on a probiotic daily to keep him a little calmer.
Refuse to medicate if I can do it natural and I have a few tricks up m
sleeve. Dad takes him for long walks most every day to give me a break and
get him tired out. His temper has setteled a lot since these changes. So
school is in motion and he is adjusting well though we often wonders why
mamma is the teacher. We decided to go with the old school system of
Mcguffy readers for reading and he has to sit and listen to a story with me
every day. We use you tube and google play apps for this since being
visually impaired it's easier to have someone else read the book instead of
me so we can watch the pictures together but, I choose books that have the
words displayer as well so eventually he can read them himself. seems to
work well and I've found hundreds of options. We ended up going with an
android tablet as this was affordable for our budget. It works well for us
and I'll likely upgrade with the same line when I need to. Samsung Galaxy
tab 2 for now. bought it before 3 came out. This is where almost all of his
school material is located so it's been a real asset so I don't need to buy
curriculum for a few years yet. yay.Myles will be 5 in Jan so he's started
a year early. So if reading comes slowly it's not biggy he's ahead of the
game either way. Wow gotta come on more often so I'm not always writing
books. good grief. LOL Hope this encourages others with hyper, late
trainers. There is hope. Believe me I know. Training at this age can be
more than a little stressful but, everyone has to get there someday.
