Sight words and the method sight reading are 2 completely different animals.
Sight words are words that can't be sounded out, where the method you are
speaking of is professionally known as whole word, and I agree not a
complete way to teach reading, and often results in children with weak
spelling skills.

I wouldn't go sight reading only, though, have posted about that earlier,

Sorry that is not how you wrote it. I'd be happy t try to help you with the
sight word issue as reading is my focus in my degree.

In one way or another obtain or make sight word flash cards, Make sure you
have 2 of every word. Then play games like go fish and memory with the
words, and she must read the word each time. So when she flips over 2 words
in memory she has to read them both out loud she just can't say they aren't
the same. Using the matching sets of cards for these 2 games are 2 of my
students favorite ways over the years and it helps a ton! Reading eggs is
also super helpful and super accessible.

I could give you pages of ideas, but those are the easiest quickly.

As I said, I really was just asking the original poster to describe the
methods she would be using, since I'm genuinely interested in ways I can
help my first grader. She's having difficulty learning her sight words.  I
posted about that on the list a few weeks ago.  I wasn't even hinting at the
idea that a blind person couldn't home school; I was interested in how it
would be done, not if it could be done.

Hi, Frankly blind people can teach reading and writing I'm a teacher with a
degree in elementary education that runs a childcare and has homeschooled
several peoples children plus taught in the classroom.

Now for the original posters questions. there is a yahoo group called blind
homeschooler and a face book group with the same name.

I would be happy to talk with you on ways it can be done.

Is she sighted?  I'm not doubting your abilities at all.  I'm just curious
how you intend to go about teaching your daughter to read and write and
such.  Frankly, I'm very interested in knowing the details of how you plan
to do it because some of your methods might help me supplement my child's
education at home, even though she's attending public school.

Hi everyone,
Does anyone on this list homeschool their children? I have a 6 year old
child, and I am planning to homeschool her starting next week. I have
already withdrawn her from the school she was enrolled in and researched the
laws relating to homeschooling in Texas and am looking into what method or
sources for teaching her I will use. I would like to know if there are also
blind parents homeschooling their children? I am totally blind and will be
homeschooling her on my own as a single parent. Also, are there blind
homeschoolers groups I could join for blind parents?
