Uncontracted Braille drives me bonkers. I just find it
tedious. I'm glad it works for you.

My daughter is sighted, and I've found the print/braille books from
Seedlings to be a great resource. Over the spring and summer I bought
nearly every book produced for four- to nine-year-olds in uncontracted
braille, with no pictures, but with the words printed above the braille line
by line, to aid in the teaching of early reading skills. Since mid-August,
we've been reading the books aloud together to fulfill the fifteen minute
daily requirement that started with the beginning of the first grade. There
are books on other sites with pictures, but the ones from Seedlings are
especially valuable because the print and braille are reproduced exactly
line by line, so if my daughter stumbles over a word, I know where to find
the problem. The books range from very easy beginning reads by Dr. Seuss to
more advanced stories, and the subjects are quite diverse--everything from
contemporary stories like "The Polar Express" and "Shrek" to true tales
about Seabiscuit and Helen Keller. The site is
http://seedlings.org/index.php.

I've also bought math and word flash cards from the Beulah Reimer Legacy.
So far I've only used the flash cards of rhyming words to play a memory
game, but I'm sure the rest of the cards will come in handy as my daughter
makes more progress with her spelling and arithmetic. That site is
http://beulahreimerlegacy.com/.

Ooooooh, such a basic question I didn't even think of asking, duh!! Our
girls are sighted, I am a braille user, so I had to figure how we could work
this. I had been a classroom teacher in a public school before marrying,
so I'm sure that experience helped me, but not necessary. A lot of good
common sense will help.

Is she sighted? I'm not doubting your abilities at all. I'm just curious
how you intend to go about teaching your daughter to read and write and
such. Frankly, I'm very interested in knowing the details of how you plan
to do it because some of your methods might help me supplement my child's
education at home, even though she's attending public school.

Hi everyone,
Does anyone on this list homeschool their children? I have a 6 year old
child, and I am planning to homeschool her starting next week. I have
already withdrawn her from the school she was enrolled in and researched the
laws relating to homeschooling in Texas and am looking into what method or
sources for teaching her I will use. I would like to know if there are also
blind parents homeschooling their children? I am totally blind and will be
homeschooling her on my own as a single parent. Also, are there blind
homeschoolers groups I could join for blind parents?
Thank you,
Misty
